Things to avoid while Migrating to Cloud Platform

When you are preparing for migration, while transferring, and even when the records are on the internet, you need to examine different cloud computing service security risks at every step. Some of the security risks include malware infections, internet service abuse, loss of sensitive records, violating existing regulatory controls, account hijacking, and many more.

Hackers always have a keen eye for raw and processed records that can help them breach the information inside the computer. Hence, it is quite necessary to know about the complete locations of the data.

Many companies do not store personal records on the servers. The company can indeed experience a nightmare if any sensitive data is leaked to a stranger. However, the harsh truth is that there is no such thing as true privacy on the internet. Hence, storing your credit/debit card details or passwords should be strictly avoided.

Things to avoid while cloud migration

However, restricting the storage of data is not quite the solution. You can enhance the security of the data on the servers. Some of the effective ways that can help you secure data on the cloud are:

1. Migrating all the data at once

Based on the amount of information stored on your company, cloud transfer can take months or even years to become fulfilled. This is because a perfect record shift should take place in small phases like migrating non-essential information before the essential ones. Many enterprises may look at the calculated timeline and grin. They would ask, “Why can’t you put all the data on the server at once?”

While migrating to the server you have not experienced what the cloud computing service provider offers in its solutions. Your organization needs to assess the transfer of your data to the computer network in some steps. The first and foremost step should be the migration of non-essential data over sensitive data. This protects the critical data if you make any mistakes during migration. Once your organization is accustomed to your computer network deployment, it can focus on migrating more essential data.

2. Not choosing the right/best cloud computing service

Due to spiking competition of switching to the server, many organizations decide to quickly migrate to the cloud. However, rushing something can derail the task. Hence, do your research well enough before deciding to migrate. It is immensely crucial to recognize the current requisites of the organization and decide future needs. There are diverse capabilities in the technology infrastructure of each application. It also requires a suitable platform. Additionally, you should also examine the contract limitations to tackle any future glitches.

3. Not estimating the cost of migration

Migration can cost a fortune to a company. Even though the result of this investment would be godlike, you will eventually face unexpected spending during your migration period. You need to assess the final cost of processing your information and processes in the server environment. Although, you also need to be concerned about the cost of making your records unavailable while it is being migrated. Regardless of the cost, your enterprise should know the approx. costing of it if any financial blows are being dealt with the business through this investment or not.

4. Migration of data and workflows without an objective

Just because you can migrate something to the server does not mean you always should. Your enterprise would have some specific plans if they are adopting the cloud into its infrastructure. Similarly, your enterprise would have some plans when it comes to server migration of your information into it. Cloud computing services have majorly grown in the past years and it has become very encouraging and possible to perform any task or business on the server. This, however, does not mean that you must perform in the cloud. Your leaders need to analyze the costs and merit the migration of your data to a server. After that, it should be determined whether migration is worth it or not.

5. Forgetting about server security

You should always aim to keep your records secure even while you are migrating resources to the server. You should not assume that the data being shifted or transferred to the server will be automatically safe. Although cloud providers implement many services and policies to protect server environment, you are equally responsible for its security. There will be a variation of responsibilities between your vendor and enterprise that should be highlighted in the provider’s service level agreement (SLA).

6. Lazy or no configuration of your data and apps for the server

While moving projects or records into the server, you should not expect it to work instantly. You might need to reconfigure your information and data based on your file types and the server you are utilizing to work within the cloud. It might require more computing power when you are running an application on the server, than what your service provider offers you. Make sure to examine the applications and projects you put in the server are working efficiently.

7. No in-house server migration professional

Even if there is a dedicated team working on the migration of your records, you should never entirely depend on them. This is because the in-house member is more professional than you in understanding your business-centric applications.

8. A quick migration process

The process of a speedy recovery might create many complications in recognizing what files have been migrated and what is not. Hence, a normal speed is the best course of action as you can examine the process effectively and recognize any issues that occur.

Synopsis

The rising demand for cloud-computing service in converting businesses to go for server migration, however, rushing the process can complicate things. Hence, it is always suggested to conscientiously understand the strategy and then implement the migration process. Whatever vendor you opt for i.e. Amazon, Rackspace, Google or Heroku to name a few, you also need to hire professional services to tackle any issues in the future. The mistakes stated-above are quite common that you must avoid giving you an insight into what to do and what not to do while cloud migration.
